Preschool ~ the first steps in separateness

The mother-child relationship is paradoxical and, in a sense, tragic. It requires the most intense love on the mother's side, yet this very love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent. ~Erich Fromm

At preschool, we learn to stand on our own two feet ~ or hands, as the case may be!

Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change. ~Stephen Covey

I used to say to my children, "My job as a mother is not to do for you, but to teach you to do for yourselves." This is the hardest thing we do as parents, this letting go, this sitting on your own hands, in order to let your child develop the independence to confidently go in the direction of his or her dreams.

The tears your child has shed as he clung to your hug on the first day of preschool, has turned into tears as he clings to his new friends and experiences. After a few short weeks, now your child hates to leave!

What makes the Five Mile River Nursery School different, and so important for your child, is our philosophy of nurturing the creative thinking, the intellectual curiosity, and the passion for learning that is built on the foundation of your child's unique gifts, his styles and temperament.

Children should be delighted in, respected, and listened to. Their thoughts have not been blocked by adult presumptions. We do not presume to think for them! Their openness to the world of wonder is celebrated here. Their questions have become an exciting new path and perception for us ~ we the adults who are lucky enough to facilitate their learning.

Life is abundant and joyful. Let's embrace our growth in separateness, in freedom, in our power to choose, respond, change...and ultimately, deepen that relationship of love between parent and child.
